Cequent are proud to have delivered this highly sensitive project located in Ruru Lawn Cemetery for the Christchurch City Council.
The timber and stone pergola collapsed in the February 2011 earthquake, and has been reconstructed to its pre earthquake form. Key ICOMOS principles were adopted for the project by salvaging as much heritage fabric as possible. The introduction of reinforced concrete core to the pillars, walls and foundations has strengthened the memorial to withstand future earthquakes. Additional site sensitivities of working in an operating cemetery saw a collaborative approach between cemetery sextons and the stonemason, in delivering this project.
Cequent also led the successful application for Heritage Lottery Grant funding for the project. The memorial was completed in time for a rededication ceremony on 18 November 2014, the 67th anniversary of the fire.
