Reconstruction of the memorial to the 41 victims of the 1947 Ballantynes department store fire.

Cequent are proud to help deliver this highly sensitive project located in Ruru Lawn Cemetery. Christchurch City Council engaged Jo Grigg to project manage the design and reconstruction of the memorial. The timber and stone pergola collapsed in the February 2011 earthquake, and has been reconstructed to its pre earthquake form. Key ICOMOS principles were adopted for the project by salvaging as much heritage fabric as possible. The introduction of a reinforced concrete core to the pillars, walls and foundations has strengthened the memorial to withstand future earthquakes. Additional site sensitivies of working in an operating cemetery saw a collaborative approach between cemetery sextons and the stonemason, in delivering this project.

The project was the recipient of multiple donations and a Heritage Lottery Grant, to assist with funding the repair (alternative is to say 'Cequent lead the successful application for Heritage Lottery Grant funding for the project.) The memorial was completed in time for a rededication ceremony on 18 November 2014, the 67 year anniversary of the fire.
